Read before the next activity (reflexive pronouns, each other, one another: LESSON)
Reflexive Pronouns
- The reflexive pronouns are:
| singular: | myself | yourself | himself | herself | itself |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| plural: | ourselves | yourselves | themselves |
- We use a reflexive pronoun when the object is the same as the subject of the verb:
I was so scared that I fell and hurt MYSELF.
- But we do not use a reflexive pronoun after verbs which describe things people usually do for themselves:
It was very cold and he shaved quickly.
- We can use a reflexive pronoun to insist...:
The place ITSELF was depressing.
- We can use a reflexive pronoun after a preposition:
He wanted to do it by HIMSELF. (without any help)
Each other, one another
We looked at each other = I looked at her and she looked at me.
Each other is more common than one another ; but traditionally each other implies two (people) while one another implies more people.
