1) auto+bio+ graphein , which means self+ life + write so : writing about oneself
2) The words was first used in 1797 in a newspaper but was said to be pedandic (by William Taylor).
3) The Book of Margery Kempe is said to be the first English autobiography (early XV). She was a Christian mystic.
4) De Quincey wrote Confessions of an English Opium-Eater ( published in 1821).
5) We are usually given a first-person point of view.
6) It's unusual but possible to find such autobiographies : The Education of Henry Adams was written in the third person.
7) Philippe Lejeune is the one who wrote: "In order to create an autobiography, the author enters into a pact or
contract with the readers, promising to give a detailed account of his
or her life, and of nothing but that life." So according to him the writer promises to tell the truth...
8) People who tell about their lives usually do so when they think it may be interesting for other people. That's the reason why politicians or artists write about themselves.
NB: a memoir is different as it is rather a historical account written thanks to personal knowledge...
9) There are also fictional autobiographies like Great Expectations by Dickens (1821), Orlando by Virginia Woolf ( 1928), Nat Tate: An American Artist 1928–1960 , by William Boyd (1998)...
